HARMONY # 3
Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe is one of those places where you can just sit back and enjoy Africa at its finest. During a trip to the Matusadona National Park on the shores of the Kariba, a herd of 250 buffalo would pass by my tent twice a day, and this happened throughout the entire duration of my stay. Waterbuck and Impalas grazed close by, Fish Eagles dominated the sky with their beautiful cry and hippos bathed in the nearby water.
It was summer and the huge expanse of water help to generate magnificent thunderstorms. The lake is around 70km wide with Zambia bordering the other side. On this day I was at the water’s edge when a looming storm began to move in.
In order to create something different in my photography, I love to work with either very wide or very long lenses. The wind started to blow forcefully and thin cloud covering started to form above me even though the storm was still many kilometers away. The contrast between the dark blue sky as a backdrop and the water in the foreground mirroring the cloud cover called for the use of a long lens. The scene spanned over 30km, so I grabbed my 600mm lens to help compress it into one shot. The result is a dramatic surreal image of drowned trees etched out against the dark backdrop of a stormy sky. |
